Skylights

A well-placed skylight can change the feel of a room entirely. Natural light reduces the need for artificial lighting, makes interior spaces feel larger, and adds a quality of warmth that’s hard to replicate any other way. When a skylight is installed correctly, it performs for decades without issues. When it isn’t, it becomes one of the most reliable sources of roof leaks on the market.

Rivera Roofing Specialists installs and repairs skylights for homeowners across New Jersey. We treat skylights as a roofing project — because that’s what they are — and we make sure every installation is properly flashed, sealed, and integrated into the roofing system.

Skylight Installation

The quality of a skylight installation is almost entirely in the details. The opening in the decking needs to be properly framed. The flashing kit needs to be installed correctly for the specific skylight and the specific roofing material. The surrounding shingles need to be integrated in a way that directs water away from the opening rather than toward it.

We work with quality skylight manufacturers and use manufacturer-approved flashing kits designed for each specific unit and roof type. We do not improvise flashing solutions or use generic sealing materials that degrade over time.

Skylight Repair and Leak Diagnosis

Skylights that leak are a common call for us. In many cases, the skylight itself is fine — the problem is failed or improperly installed flashing. We diagnose the actual source of the leak rather than simply recaulking around the frame, which is a temporary fix at best.

When the skylight unit itself has failed — cracked glazing, failed seals in double-pane units showing fogging, or damaged frames — we assess whether repair or replacement is the more practical solution and give you a clear recommendation.

Flat Roofing and Tubular Skylights

For rooms where traditional skylights aren’t feasible due to roof pitch or attic depth, tubular skylights are an effective option. They capture light at the roof surface and channel it down through a reflective tube to a diffuser in the ceiling. We can discuss whether this is a viable option for your specific situation.

If your home runs hot in summer or you’ve experienced recurring ice dam issues, ventilation may be part of the problem. We assess and address it as part of our inspection process.

Energy Efficiency Considerations

Modern skylights are considerably more thermally efficient than older units. If you have skylights that are more than fifteen years old and you’ve noticed heat loss in winter or excessive heat gain in summer, replacement with a current Energy Star-rated unit may be worth considering alongside any repair work. Most skylights come with solar shades.
