Ice & Water Shield
New Jersey winters are hard on roofs. The cycle of freezing and thawing, combined with heavy snow loads and ice buildup at the eaves, creates conditions where water can find its way under shingles and into your home — even on a roof that appears to be in good condition from the outside.
Ice and water shield is a self-adhering membrane installed beneath the shingles in vulnerable areas of the roof. It creates a watertight barrier that protects the underlying structure even when ice dams force water back up the slope. For NJ homeowners, it’s not an optional upgrade — it’s a critical part of a properly built roofing system.

How Ice Dams Form
When heat escapes from the living space into the attic, it warms the roof surface and melts snow. That snowmelt runs down toward the eaves, where the surface is colder, and refreezes. Over time, the ice buildup creates a dam that traps water on the roof. That standing water, with nowhere else to go, works its way under the shingles.
The damage from ice dams often shows up as water stains on ceilings or walls, long after the winter that caused them. By the time it’s visible inside, there’s already been meaningful damage to the structure or insulation.

Part of Every New Roof We Install
Ice and water shield is a standard component of every roof we install. We don’t treat it as an add-on, and we don’t skip it to bring a bid down. If you’re having a full roof replacement or a major repair, it goes in as part of the system.
If your existing roof lacks proper ice and water shield protection and you’ve experienced ice dam issues in the past, we can assess the situation and discuss your options.
Where We Install Ice and Water Shield
At a minimum, ice and water shield should be installed along the eaves & valleys — the most common location for ice dams to form. In many cases, we also install it in valleys, around chimneys and skylights, along walls, and anywhere else where water tends to concentrate or flow.
The exact placement depends on your roof’s pitch, the complexity of the structure, and local climate requirements. We follow all applicable building codes and manufacturer specifications as part of every installation.
Materials We Trust
We use ice and water shield products from manufacturers we’ve worked with for years, including materials compatible with GAF and TAMKO roofing systems. Quality membranes maintain their adhesion across temperature extremes — a detail that matters significantly in the NJ climate.
